Our mission is to provide compassionate and specialised care for individuals affected by dementia and mental health issues in Swaffham and the surrounding areas. Swaffham & District Mental Health Association was setup in 1974 when a few people would meet for a coffee and support each other. They met at the Merle Boddy Centre on a Tuesday and Thursday. People were refered to the group by Social Services. The group participated in a variety of activities according to the needs and wishes of the group members. Drinks and a hot meal were also provided.
In 1993, responding to the needs of the group, a self-help session was started on a Wednesday.
In 1994 the Association decided to become an independent organisation rather than be affiliated to the Norfolk and Norwich Mental Health Association. On 9th August 1994 the assoication became incorporated as a private limited company and became Swaffham & District Mental Health Association Limited.
The newly formed limited company was then able to apply to the Charity Commission to register as a charity. Swaffham & District Mental Health Association Limited was granted charitable status on the 26th October 1995.
