Our History

The Early Days

Swaffham & District Mental Health Association was setup in 1974 when a few people would meet for a coffee and support each other. They met at the Merle Boddy Centre on a Tuesday and Thursday. People were refered to the group by Social Services. The group participated in a variety of activities according to the needs and wishes of the group members. Drinks and a hot meal were also provided.

In 1993, responding to the needs of the group, a self-help session was started on a Wednesday.

Becoming a Charity

In 1994 the Association decided to become an independent organisation rather than be affiliated to the Norfolk and Norwich Mental Health Association. On 9th August 1994 the assoication became incorporated as a private limited company and became Swaffham & District Mental Health Association Limited.

The newly formed limited company was then able to apply to the Charity Commission to register as a charity. Swaffham & District Mental Health Association Limited was granted charitable status on the 26th October 1995.
